In 2007, the Linnaeus Arboretum at Gustavus Adolphus College received a grant from the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation to help develop a new 70-acre prairie on the west side of the arboretum. The development of the new "Coneflower Prairie" took a significant step forward earlier this fall when the planting process was initiated by Feder's Prairie Seed Co. of Blue Earth, Minn.
Gustavus Adolphus College has once again been ranked in the top 20 of the Institute of International Education's Open Doors report for the total number of students who study abroad.
The Hillstrom Museum of Art at Gustavus Adolphus College will host two new exhibitions from Monday, Nov. 24 to Friday, Jan. 30. Illusion and Certainty (Paintings by Martin Weinstein) will be on display concurrently with Come On!: American Posters from World War I.
The Gustavus women's basketball team will open its 2008-09 season in Sherman, Texas over Thanksgiving weekend with games against Austin College and Southwestern University. Coach Mickey Haller is excited about the blend of youth and experience on this team and she is confident that this team has the work ethic and team chemistry to develop into a group that can help the Gusties qualify for a spot in the MIAC Playoffs for the ninth straight year.
The Gustavus men's basketball team fell in its 2008-09 season opener 77-67 to Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, Minn. Jesse Van Sickle hit a three-point shot to pull the Gusties within six points (72-66) with 1:11 remaining in the contest, but the Vikings converted five of six free throws to seal the win. Ky Battern paced Gustavus with 13 points off the bench, while Tommy Saffert scored a game-high 21 points for Bethany Lutheran.
The jazz ensembles from the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College combine efforts on Saturday, November 22, to present a concert in Bjorling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. Under the direction of guest director Adam Rossmiller, the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble and the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band begin this free concert at 7:30 p.m.
Director Gregory Aune and the St. Ansgar's Mens Chorus present their fall concert Sunday, November 23 at 3:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. Sunday's concert is free and open to the public.
The Gustavus Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Paul Hill, will presents its fall concert on Sunday, November 23, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The performance, held in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall, is free and open to the public.
